 Q. What is wireless Internet and how does it work?

Wireless essentially describes the way an Internet service is delivered. Instead of utilising copper wire networks that provide traditional phone lines and ADSL internet services, wireless internet is delivered via microwave radio signals through the air.

Airnet uses fixed wireless technology to deliver our broadband services and although its wireless all our subscribers have fixed connections.

It works like this: Our subscribing customers have a radio unit installed on their building, which has direct line of sight to one of our base station repeaters. From there information is then relayed securely via our network and onto the World Wide Web.

A key advantage of Airnet’s wireless technology is that we are able to provide high speed connections to enable both broadband internet access and more recently phone services.

Q. What is “line of sight”?

Line-of-sight means obtaining a direct and clear view to the nearest base station from where a radio unit device is to be mounted. This means no interference from hills, trees, hedges or buildings that can block the path to the base station.

Q. What is wireless networking?

Wireless networking provides the ability to work on a laptop or PC without the need to be tied to a network or Internet connection. WiFi is the technology that enables secure wireless networks in homes and offices.

From a wireless network you can access internet or files from a network without needing to be plugged in. Many get confused with fixed wired internet being able to deliver this service. The fact is the two things are worlds apart.

Airnet IT Solutions team can advise you on wireless networking options – call them on 0508 247 638.
