IT Support Myths
There’s a good chance that if you are running a business today you will have an IT infrastructure, whether it be 2 computers or 50 one day you will need IT support. There a quite a few misconceptions within the business community about IT support companies and the services they provide.
Myth 1: IT people are geeks who can’t communicate:
Regardless of industry it’s hard finding the right people, IT is no different. We strive to hire technically competent people who are very communicative, there are several benefits to this strategy: First it assures a “same level” approach when communicating to a client, it’s no secret that some business owners can feel intimidated by technology and having someone talking in binary doesn’t help at all.
Find a provider that has staff you feel comfortable with, make sure they have the ability to communicate technical ideas into non-technical speak so you fully understand what’s going on.
Myth 2: They’ll get here when they get here
Our reliance of IT now-a-days is such that we simply can’t wait hours for a fix, if your systems fail for whatever reason it’s good to know a reliable professional is only a call and a short time away.
Many customers are surprised by our turn-around times and it surprises us that this isn’t the norm in IT today, when choosing an IT company make sure you ask to see a list of reference sites and call everyone.
If response times are crucial have your IT company draft a service level contract so the details regarding service levels are set in stone and understood by everyone involved.
Myth 3: I can’t change providers as they know our systems too well!
This is a common one. Companies simply put up with bad service because they believe it’s extremely difficult to change. This is simply not true. Many of the systems in place in one business are similar if not identical to that next door.
If there is any variance due to specialization, competent IT personnel will be able to familiarize themselves within a short space of time. It’s also important for various reasons to have your IT company draft documentation for your site. This document contains all the IT information a new company would need to become familiar.
It’s fair to expect a transition period to some extent but you don’t have to put up with bad service when there are great service driven companies out there willing to put your IT needs at the top.
