Spring is in the Air

If the great success of E-Day last weekend (4 Oct) provided you enough inspiration to get your old computer equipment out of the way and into a recycling programme, then you should have enough motivation left to think about spring cleaning your remaining IT equipment.

The first stop is to incorporate some regular maintenance to help your PC fire up faster.

1.   Disk Clean Up

This function basically means what it says. It’s a clean up function to make space on your hard drive. Explore to this path: Start / All Programs / Accessories / Systems Tools / Disk Cleanup. The Disk Cleanup function will show a selection of files types that you can delete, like the Recycle Bin and Temporary Internet Files.

2.   Defragging

Another useful task is a system defragment or ‘defrag’. Find it in a similar location to the clean up function, at Start / All Programs / Accessories / Systems Tools / Disk Defragmentation.

When you use a computer it saves and stores information on the hard disk but over time your PC’s performance can degrade as this data gets scattered throughout the drive. A defrag is a way of ensuring that this data can be found quicker by the PC. There are great benefits from doing this regularly.

3.   Turn off

Lastly turning off or restarting your computer can help keep your PC run better. Do this weekly.

I would always suggest that you get an IT professional to do a proper clean out of your PC, especially if you have viruses and performance issues. If you are in business, get your IT provider to do a complete systems clean, including your server.

Spring cleaning time is also a great time to take stock of what systems you have and decide if it is all working for you. The best way to do this is to involve your IT professional who can provide advice and bring new ideas to the table. This is a great opportunity for you to plan for the future needs of your business or setup. This review should be wide spanning to include your phone systems and internet as well as your IT equipment.

Happy Spring Cleaning!
